More Self Service

So this is the first issue of Self Service to go hardback.  Fall/Winter 2006.  Shalom Harlow and Raquel Zimmerman star on both versions of the cover.  Self Service is the ultimate.  There is a 95 page layout with Shalom and Raquel with all these avant-garde  pics photographed by Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin.  They also feature old photographs of cool people like these of Peter Saville and a young Terry Richardson taken by his mother, Annie Lomax.  There are also old fashion advertisements sometimes photographed with new accessories on top of them. And new ads like Tsumori Chisato that you can't find anywhere else.  On top of it all at the end of the mag there's always cool interviews like this one with Tilda Swinton and Mike Mills.

Also found my copy of 'The Totally Awesome Val Guide'.  This is like totally amazing!  It explains how to eat, drink and breathe like a valley girl.  Published in 1982! 

Memory Lane

So I just took a trip home to Louisiana. As usual, I dug through all my old junk. All the fun things I don't have room for in my tiny New York apartment. I came across some really good stuff! First, my old Guess jeans which are probably circa '84-'85. The pair with the triangular pockets were my first pair. I remember pretty much growing out of these as soon as I got them. The really cool ones with the fold down pockets belonged to a friend of my sister's and never really fit me. I just wore them with a long shirt. The zippers are broken in both of them. My heart started beating really fast when I saw that Guess label. My mother got the ones with the buttons on the fly. I remember seeing 2 really cool girls at my sister's church in White Castle(a tiny Louisiana town). One had really amazing Guess jeans that I never saw anywhere ever again. The fly tied up. She had some cool long cardigan on with them. I knew they must have been visiting their grandparents from like New York or something. I'm pretty sure I tried to copy her look for the next 20 years or so.

Overly Chloe

So this Self Service has 120 pages of nothing but Chloe pics done by different photographers and stylists. Of course my favorite section is the one styled by Camille Bidault-Waddington and photographed by Terry Richardson. I'm a huge fan of Camille. She is one of my fave stylists by far. She also happens to be the wife of Jarvis Cocker. Can you get any cooler than that? I saw her in Paris during fashion week; I think she was on her way to the Westwood show. I also think she noticed me silently freaking.

Self Service

Self Service is my favorite magazine ever. I can't get it as often as I would like since it runs about $35 a pop. Which shouldn't be a problem since it only comes out twice a year but sometimes I sleep on it. Last year it changed over to a hardcover format. This issue was the Chloe Sevigny issue. This is my fashion bible.

Rusty Dennis(Cher, pt. 2)

Well, I said I didn't really have to say much about this, that the pics could speak for themselves. But I have more to say! First of all, I usually get a rush when the weather starts to give a little and I start thinking about my spring/summer wardrobe. First and foremost I'm a southern girl so I relate more to sandal weather. Usually I get inspiration for the upcoming season from a mishmash of things. This season it's all about Rusty Dennis. My soundtrack for summer will be the 'Rusty Dennis' playlist on my ipod- lots of Grateful Dead and Steely Dan's 'Do it Again'. I'm wearing the devil out of my denim jacket-my classic Guess one. And simple gold hoops. I don't even think she wore denim jackets or gold hoops but it's just an inspiration you know?

Cher

So I have a few movies that are forever burned in my memory fashionwise. One of them is Mask. I don't even really have to say anything here. I'll let the pics speak for themselves. By the way, I'm back. Winter starts to bum me out, but I'm coming out of the doldrums here and I'll be writing more real soon...

Bigmouth Strikes Again

Went to the Morrissey show last night. Had pretty great seats on the first mezzanine. No obstructions in our view whatsoever. There was a short film first with snippets of New York Dolls and outtakes from East Of Eden. The finale was amazing with fan after fan jumping over the barricade onstage to hug the holy one. The security couldn't keep up. Everybody was going for it. Wish I had brought a real camera, all I had was my iphone but I did get a few fun shots outside the show.

Tokyo, Part 4

Pretty much everything is cooler in Japan, like when you order a drink in a cafe, it's like a pineapple soda mint sorbet thing , or a green tea float, one of many different floats entitled 'Float Party'.



Or if you go to a store it's called Backwoods and the whole building is encased in branches and it only sells different types of thread. (I didn't go in this one but I'm sure it was something like that.)

Tokyo, Part 3

So I mentioned we stayed in 2 hotels, right? Well for the last night of our trip we stayed at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo. This place is rather pricey which is why we only stayed one night. But I can tell you it was totally worth it. I hate saying this, but it's the hotel in Lost In Translation. That gives you a point of reference. You can picture the pool and the gym at least. The rest of the hotel is amazing. You're treated like royalty. There is a person that greets you when you get out of the cab and somehow they already knew our name. They take you up to the 41st floor to check in. You are given 'Tiffany' keychains. We stayed one floor up from the lobby. We were a little concerned that maybe the room would not live up to all the hype, that maybe the hotel would be gorgeous but a little tiny room. No way. There was a bed you could swim in, 40" flatscreens with great cable stations that played the Simpsons and The Outsiders. There was an amazing view of Tokyo. The gigantic bathtub filled in minutes with luxurious bubbles courtesy of the Aesop products, the flatscreen in the bathroom playing relaxing nature scenes. And the toilet actually had a dryer on it. It's official! Rich people don't even have to wipe their own asses. We had dinner from the famous Delicatessan located in the hotel. But the big splurge was room service breakfast which cost about $75. Worth every penny. I felt like Linsey Lohan as the guy came in with his white gloves to set up the table. I didn't want to leave this paradise as we were handed bottles of Park Hyatt Water in case we got thirsty on our trip to the airport.

Tokyo, Part 2

Tokyo is packed. Like New York x10. But somehow the place is spotless. There are no trashcans yet no litter. The people here are obsessed with cleanliness. Even when you eat at a really cheap fast food place they give you a wet napkin to clean your hands. And forget about the bathrooms, the bathrooms here are amazing. I only encountered one bathroom that wasn't sparkling clean yet it was cleaner than the bathrooms at Saks. And this was at a fast food place in the middle of one of the busiest areas in Tokyo. Basically all the toilets have all these buttons that clean every part of your bottom region. Not just a bidet but a spray that cleans you after you do a 2. These toilet controls are located on the walls next to the toilet mostly. Apparently there are two types of flushes but I'm not sure what the difference is. Ann(my friend that's been there for 2 months) says she had to leave without flushing a couple of times cause she just couldn't figure out which button to push.

Tokyo, Japan Part 1

So I've been in Tokyo for the past week. As soon as we got there we met up with some friends Ann and Stradton who are teaching in a little town about 4 hours out of Japan. They have been there about 2 months and were able to show us some new things to do. We ate at a Korean place where you cook your own meat. They also showed us how to eat at a place where you order everything at a machine outside and give the tickets to the people inside and they give you the food. This was a good, cheap and easy way to eat. We stayed in two different hotels, first off the B Roppongi in the Roppongi district which is kinda the sleazy part but still very clean and safe. Which is weird because the first night we were there we ran into Curtis Sliwa founder of Guardian Angels with some of his Japanese counterparts. He said Roppongi can get a little rough on the weekends.

Method For My Madness

First off, I hate most scented body lotions. I buy all my stuff fragrance free with the exception of sunscreen if it's beachy. I love beachy scent. But that is not why I love the new Method Beach Sage body wash and lotion. I started using the body wash a couple of months ago and I'm obsessed with it. I can't even describe the smell, just that it is really amazing. But I really only use Curel and Aveeno for body lotions. Fragrance free Curel and that Aveeno Creamy oil which smells like almonds, which also passes inspection. But I didn't thought the Beach Sage wouldn't be right in the lotion form. Something about scented body lotion mixed with my skin makes it turn weird. This stuff has a great light texture for Summer and smells suprisingly sophisticated for a $5 lotion. p.s. I'm obsessed with the whole Method line. They make great cleansing and laundry products too!

Fair Is Fair

I'm obsessed with Billie Jean style right now. I'm trying to work this look for summer. I even went so far as to look up the costume designer in this movie. Donna Linson. She didn't really do much else, although she did work in the costume dept. on Fast Times, nuff said.

Just Makeup

Okay sorry it's been a while. Let's talk about makeup. For a while there I was really into my new oil-free tinted moisturizer by Laura Mercier. But it's been so hot in NYC lately that by the time I got home my face looked way too greasy. So I switched back to powder for a while. I bought a great new mineral one from Urban Decay. I've been dying to use mineral powder but had some serious trouble finding one I liked. My skin is pretty pale and they all seem too dark for me. The great thing about this one is that it's yellow and it reduces all the red in my skin. My skin is finally acting like it's old self. After about 2 months of doctor-prescribed Benzaclin it is finally starting to look pretty clear. I'm just going to list everything else I'm digging right now because they're pretty self explanatory.

Topshop Madness

So you know I had to get in on the Kate Moss Madness! I had all but decided not to go. The lines would be crazy, I wouldn't be able to get the pansy print dress etc. etc. But of course I decided I had to do it at about 3am which left me about 4 hours to sleep. I went to Barney's on Tuesday as well with the naive assumption I may get into see her. But of course it was a private party and she wasn't going to be there for another 3 hours. And I'm just not that desperate. So I got there at about 9:30 and the line wasn't too bad. I was just going for fun anyway so I wasn't really concerned. The one dress I wanted was what everyone wanted so I wasn't going to get my hopes up. The line finally started to trickle in. I met some girls on line-the one looking like she's praying for Kate is Susie. The blond next to her in the pic with her back to us remains nameless but is a saint. When we got in she grabbed 2 of the dresses I wanted but handed me my size when she saw me crestfallen. Big ups again. Now I say 'my size'. There was so much confusion on the sizes because of the british sizing. And they only had like sizes 8-12 which translates into 4-8. So my size '12' dress is like an 8. Needless to say I walked around Barney's plotting my ebay strategy. But when I got home it miraculously fits. Barely, but it fits! The sleeves are way tight but I can work with it. I also picked up a tshirt with the sequin sleeves and a black vest. $270 american. Nothing else was really worth getting.
Good news ladies, I overheard the owner of Topshop say it will be here in a couple of months, he's been looking at locations. That's him in the picture.

Dittos

So I got my new pink Dittos today. Dittos is an awesome brand from the 70's that are really high-waisted and make your butt look really good. Thank goodness, since I hear that Jordache is suing Daniella Clarke from Frankie B over the trademark and it might be hard to get them! I love them! I will be on the lookout for the green ones now. I was a little behind in getting over to Bendel's with all this wedding debt I've got. Supposedly Intermix is carrying them as well but I didn't see any as of Saturday. And I just read about this lawsuit thing. I also bought one of the new cream shadow duos from Nars-Pink Panther which I do not need! It is gorgeous and I do love their cream shadows. But basically I bought it because I was totally bombarded at the front of Bendel's cause they're doing this Nars photography exhibit and all the Nars makeup people are up front not letting you leave the store without a 'touch-up'. The photog exhibit is amazing though. Take a swing by just to look at the windows. I adore Francois Nars and own at least half the line. But this is one of the main reasons I do not like Henri Bendel's. I loathe the way every counter tries to stop you to put makeup on. It's annoying. I have on my ipod for a reason. It means do not disturb...

Sorry

Yeah, so it's been a while. Sorry, I was busy getting married. How many people can do that in such style with like 3 months notice. And by the way, I totally nailed the Seems Like Old Times/Victorian look. Word.

Seems Like Old Times

So I've been freakin' for the past week cause my wedding is only 2 weeks away. Even being a simple city hall can be hectic. I've totally changed gears on my look. I've switched gears from the Rosemary's Baby look to a Seems Like Old Times look. For those of you who don't know this one it stars Goldie Hawn, Chevy Chase and Charles Grodin. The year was 1980 and the look was pure Goldie gold. I couldn't find the picture of the scene where her hair is all pinned up and perfectly messy. You know how she rolls. It's that 80's pinned up bun with tendrils look. I'm wearing this all lace ivory dress(Lauren Moffatt) and it's that faux Victorian look that was really big in the 80's. It resurfaces every couple of seasons but it was really big back then. Think Abby's wedding(to Gary) dress and the party scene in Valley Girl. I got a velvet ribbon for the waist that I can only describe as Marie Antoinette Blue. I'll get back to you on the actual color?

Wind

So my boyfriend DVRed a movie for me the other night called Wind because it had my other bf Matthew Modine in it. (He's good like that.) I had never heard of it before. It's from 1992. Jennifer Grey costars. Whatever. I do have to say this is the best MM has ever looked. He's kicking a little bit of a tan because he's a yachtsman trying to win the America's Cup. Who cares what it's about... He looks amazing!

Sixteen Candles

I saw Molly Ringwald in Max Brenners on Second Avenue today. This is a major one for me. Sixteen Candles is in my top 5 movies of all time. She's adorable. I didn't recognize her at first. I just thought she was really pretty then I heard her voice and there was no denying.
